Chateau Moulin Saint Georges

Château Moulin St Georges has been referred to as a junior version of Château Ausone as it is owned by the same proprietors, the Vauthier family. Its 17.3 acres of vineyards are located between those of Ausone and La Gaffelière and are well-sited on a south-west facing slope, known as the Pavie slope. The vineyards are planted with Merlot (66%), the rest (34%) Cabernet Franc and Cabernet Sauvignon.
At one point in time, during the early 1990s, Alain Vauthier planted Petit Verdot, as it was already planted at their other Right Bank estate, Chateau Fonbel.
However, those vines were eventually pulled up and replanted with Merlot and Cabernet Franc as the grape variety in their terroir was hard to ripen in most vintages.

The soil is of course not equal to Ausone. The terroir of Chateau Moulin Saint Georges is clay over limestone soils with western exposures. The vines are on average, 25 years of age. The vineyard is planted to a vine density of 5,500 vines per hectare. The vineyard has gentle slopes that rise up to 25 meters in elevation. The vineyard is divided into 2 main sections. The larger portion is on the flats, not far from Ausone. They have a smaller section of vines close to Chateau Pavie Macquin and Chateau La Clotte, another property owned by the Vauthier family.

The wine of Chateau Moulin Saint Georges is produced by the same team that makes Chateau Ausone. To produce the wine of Chateau Moulin Saint Georges, after sorting, vinification of Moulin St. Georges is conducted in temperature-controlled, stainless steel tanks with a month-long cuvaison. Malolactic fermentation takes place in French oak barrels. The wine of Chateau Moulin Saint Georges is aged for up to 18 months in on average, 85% new, French oak barrels. However, if the vintage is very rich, it is possible for the wine to be aged in 100% new, French oak barrels.
