Pierre-Vincent Girardin, a young and talented winemaker in Burgundy, grew up in the cellars of his father, Vincent Girardin, who after starting as a vigneron in Santenay built a successful négociant business with cellars in Meursault. Vincent sold his business in 2011 though retained 4.5 hectares of prime vineyards. In the following years a new winery was built in Meursault and in 2017 the young Pierre-Vincent made his first vintage there. From the start he knew he had a different vision than his father and wanted his wines to reflect that. To minimize the impact of oak and to achieve the balance between minerality, terroir expression and freshness, he had the famous tonnellerie François Freres build 456 litre barrels for the white wines. During these tests he also established that he will not be filtrating nor use “collage" for the red wines and they are made to accentuate the silkiness of the Pinot Noir. He strongly believe that respecting nature will allow the terroir to pass on minerality to the wines.
As of now, the Domaine is made of four and a half hectares located in Beaune, Pommard, Meursault, Puligny- Montrachet & Bâtard-Montrachet spread between regional, village, premier-cru and grand-cru. The Domaine is likely to expand depending on opportunities. The goal being to have tailor-made range of appellation spreading few villages on the Côte de Beaune. In the meantime, to compensate for the current lack of appellation owned by the Domaine, they also buy grapes but make the wine themselves. It is refreshing to find a talented young vigneron who cares more about terroir expression and elegance than richly oaked wines with strong extraction. It will be exciting to watch this emerging talent over the next several decades.
