The Sugain family has been a family of grape growers in the village of Gevrey-Chambertin since 1900, and their main business has been selling grapes to négociants. In 1970, when Anne Dugas (sister of Bernard Dugas, the former owner of Dugas Pi) married Gilles, the third generation who founded Domaine Seguin, fields from the Dugas family were added to the farm, which is now owned by the Dugas family.
The couple's son Richard served as the brewer at Jean-Philippe Marchand in the same village from 2001 to 2007, and then became the brewer at Olivier Bernstein, which was founded in 2008. At the same time, they began homebrewing with the main purpose of selling bulk wine to the Maison. Since then, the numerous wines produced by Richard under the supervision of Mr. Bernstein have achieved worldwide fame. (Some of the Maison's wines are also produced at the Domaine Segan winery.)
After his father Gilles passed away in 2012, Richard officially inherited the domaine in 2018 when his mother Anne retired. He graduated from Olivier Bernstein and started making his own wine, which he had done only as a hobby until then. decided to concentrate on. Here, Gevrey-Chambertin's supernova ``Richard Seguin'' was born. (At Mr. Bernstein's request, he will also serve as the house's winemaker until the 2021 vintage). “What I mastered during my 10 years at Olivier Bernstein. Over the years, he has learned many techniques from his uncle Bernard Dugas in the field classroom. Using all of that as fuel, I aim to create wine that I am satisfied with."
The Sugan family has long practiced strict rut raisonné (reduced pesticide) cultivation, but in 2018, they transitioned to full biologic cultivation. In brewing, the secret is to ferment whole bunches at a high ratio, using the golden ratio of whole bunches: destemming = 8:2.
The richness, scale, and elegance of the works produced by this genius move the soul of the drinker to the extent that they evoke a "new world of expression" for Burgundy wine. As always with the masterpieces of artists of all genres who pioneered a new era. In 2022, she plans to return several vineyards, including Charme-Chambertin, which her mother Anne has continued to lease to Duga Pis as a fermage.
