Valdicava

When Robert Parker said, "A strong argument can be made that Valdicava is among the top three or four Brunello di Montalcino producers, with James Suckling scoring 100 points for the 2001, 2006 and 2010 Madonnal al Piano, Valdicava offers a rare opportunity for the fine wine collector. The history of the Valdicava has started since 1953, when Bramante Abbruzzese started the family vision to cultivate Sangiovese and eventually bottle the wines under his family name. Today, the winemaker and owner is Vincenzo Abbruzzese, who is well known for improving the quality of Valdicava's wines.

The estate is located in the valley of Montosoli, north of Montalcino of Tuscany. Generally, they produce 2 wines each year, which are the Rosso di Montalcino and the Brunello di Montalcino. While the single-vineyard Madonna Del Piano is produced only in the very best year. The grapes for this flagship wine come from some of the oldest vines on the property, which were planted in 1970.

The vineyards cover approximately 28 hectares of the Valdicava estate. They are split into 9 different vineyards scattered around the site, which is one of the coldest in the Brunello zone. The grapes from the vineyards Filai Lunghu, Lago, Cipressi and Nova are used for the Rosso di Montalcino, while those from Poggio, Pievecchina, Pratea and Sferracavallo are reserved for the Brunello di Montalcino. Large Slavonian oak barrels are used for aging. All grapes are organically grown and no chemical pesticides or fertilizers are used in the vineyards. total production of the estate is just 6,000 cases.

On the wine label, the angel depicted wielding a sword in the shape of a cross represents Michael, the most magnificent and famous archangel in the Bible. The sword held in his right hand is the image's defining element. He usually stands with a scale in his left hand and steps on Satan at his feet.
